Wild Alaskan Spot Prawns: 5 lb box

Sourcing shrimp responsibly is of great importance to the health of our oceans. Bottom trawling for wild shrimp and the destruction of natural ecosystems for farmed shrimp are just two of the most detrimental fishing practices today. Alaska Select is proud to source its Spot Prawns from a small and “stable” pot fishery managed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Alaska Select’s Wild Alaskan Spot Prawns (a “true shrimp” and the largest found in the North Pacific) are pot-caught in the pristine waters of Southeast Alaska and flash frozen at sea, locking in freshness. They are first deveined and the heads are removed, but the shells are left on for preservation. No Spot Prawn you consume will be male (due to catch age-restrictions), while there is a 100% chance that it has been a male! After three years of male-hood, Spot Prawns turn into females, who carry eggs on their abdomen for 4-5 months at a time. The eggs, called roe, are considered a delicacy in many cultures and often accompany Alaska Select’s Spot Prawns. If you do not wish to eat them, simply wash them off.

Flavor and Texture

  • Firm texture
  • Delicate, clean, subtly sweet flavor
  • Roe, or eggs, are sometimes found on the underbellies, and are considered a delicacy. If they are not desired, they can simply be washed off.
